Running a care home means juggling a lot of responsibilities, but one thing that always sits at the heart of good care is making sure your team has the right training. Statutory training isn’t just a tick‑box exercise — it’s the foundation that keeps residents safe, staff confident, and your service compliant with the law and CQC expectations. In practice, “statutory training” just means the training you must provide because legislation expect it. It covers the everyday essentials: keeping people safe from harm, responding in emergencies, understanding legal duties, and working in a way that protects residents’ rights and dignity. The exact topics vary depending on your service, but the principle is always the same — staff should be trained well enough to do their jobs safely and competently.
CQC doesn’t publish a single list of required courses, but they do expect providers to show that their staff are trained, up to date, and able to meet the Fundamental Standards. Inspectors look closely at how you keep track of training, how often it’s refreshed, and whether new starters are supported properly through their induction. When training slips, it’s one of the quickest ways a home ends up with a “Requires Improvement” rating.
MyQA makes life easier for care homes. Instead of guessing what’s required or digging through paperwork, MyQA has created a guide for statutory training requirements. It shows you what’s expected as a bare minimum, what frequency courses should be refreshed and will help you identify any gaps in compliance that might put you at risk during an inspection.
Mandatory training is training that is required based on the needs of the residents in your care. It is reliant on the provider to identify training needs and what CQC would expect to see during inspection. These courses could include condition specific courses such as diabetes, Parkinsons or Dementia care. They could also include care needs that are not specific to a condition such as skin integrity and wound care, End of life or clinical skills.
If you are not sure, second guessing or just what to confirm what you know, MyQA is here to help. Please download a copy of the training guide below and/or contact MyQA through the website.
